Law #01: Be Dynamic
If I have learned any lesson in the past year, it would be how to be dynamic in adverse situations.
Dynamic ( dīˈnamik)- adj.
- Characterized by constant change, activity, or progress.
- Having a lot of ideas and enthusiasm; energetic and forceful.
- (Of a person) positive in attitude and full of energy and new ideas.
- (Of a memory device) needing to be refreshed by the periodic application of a voltage (Read: apply pressure)
Though this idea is not new, it’s always nice to remember it’s importance. I’m accepting more than that I can’t control everything, and how I proceed with not having control is a direct reflection of myself.
When I first came to Korea, I anticipated many cultural differences. However, I learned about a work culture phenomenon known as the “Korean Surprise.” The Korean Surprise is when you are told, almost at the last possible moment, about a very important detail, deadline, or event. For me, these “surprises” have ranged from, a last minute class (un)scheduled class taught on a whim to a school dinner that was to take place in 30 minutes, or becoming aware of an important document that needs to be filled out and turned in on the same day, just to name a few.
Though these are seemingly small events, as a fairly systematic person who likes to prepare/plan/organize/perfect, especially while in a work setting, initially this was a tough adjustment for me and many requests really put me in panic mode. Like “when you said you need that done, you really meant you need that done NOW now? OK.” or “Oh, you need me, someone with no science background, to teach a lesson on cells in 10 minutes, got it.”
Through my travels, studies, and work, I’ve been forced to become comfortable with how last minute changes affect my life. I’ve learned to embrace expecting the unexpected. As a result, I stay on my toes which has allowed me to be more creative, lighthearted, and willing to be fluid. It’s shown in the way I interact with strangers, coworkers, and students. It’s been quite humbling, to say the least.
I by no means have perfected this, but it is something I actively work on. Reminder: Pressure makes diamonds.
Question: How do you deal with unexpected changes to plans? Do you roll with the punches, or do you get TKO’d?
Be great,
Ty
