New Year, New Habits.

Hello Hello! Long time no chat, and I’m sorry about that. I have neglected this blog long enough and this is my attempt to get back in the swing of things. We are officially 9 days into 2020! I hope you are getting the new year started off on the right foot and have left 2019’s mess in the past.

So brief life update: I’ve just returned from visiting home for the holidays and I have officially completed my first semester of law school! Though the past few months were a complete blur and flew by, my brain no longer feels like mush because I have finally taken the time to rest, and I’ve reflected on my first semester as a law student. In doing so, there are many things I’ve had to address with myself, that I would like to work on going into this next semester and this new year. With these changes in mind, I’ve created a list of habits I’d like to form in 2020.

I realize that many people believe that new years resolutions are cliche, and I do agree that the start of a new year is not the only time goals can be made to achieved or worked toward, operating on a semester timeline makes creating goals based on the calendar year more viable.

Here are 3 habits I would like to form going into the new year:

  1. Make a routine, and stick to it.

Creating and maintaining a true routine since beginning law school has been extremely difficult for me. And I’m starting to think it’s impossible lol simply because a lot of things can be unpredictable. However, there’s still benefits in attempting to follow a simple routine. I’ve never been one to go to bed at the exact same time every night, but I’ve generally always considered myself to be a productive person. Law school has challenged me on what I once considered productive and efficient, and has shown me that having productive moments does not equate to me being a discplined person. For example, I value sleep, a lot. I WILL get a cat nap in whenever and wherever I can, by any means necessary ok. Yet, I felt that I was rarely getting enough rest, which led to me being and feeling less productive. As a young professional, I don’t believe it is possible to have a very successful career without proper time management skills, and this past semester has shown me that I can always use my time more efficiently. I’m working on finding a balance in managing my priorities so that I can feel like I have spent more time being productive each day.

2. Plan Ahead.

To piggyback off of the idea of making a routine, planning ahead is key. Purposefully, financially, socially, and physically, I hope to reach many of my 2020 goals by planning ahead and proceeding accordingly. Most goals require more than the last minute thought, and I believe planning ahead is so necessary to see the big picture of things. Personally, I am a big calendar and agenda planner girl. I take my planner with me e v e r y w h e r e. I usually plan my week on Sunday to get an idea of what my week will look like and I insert any other upcoming events as soon as I learn about them or I’d likely forget about it soon after. This school year I am using an agenda made by The Happy Planner (not this exact one, but one very similar), and I love it! It has so many inspirational messages, and spaces for weekly and monthly goals. The planner is very practical, super cute, and overall it’s so me!

3. Do more things you enjoy.

Lastly, there was a point this past semester where I realized that the burnout was chasing me, and on that day I realized I had not been pouring into myself aside from my life as a student. I think the only way to stay sane in this world of law school is by doing (healthy) things outside of school that you actually enjoy as an escape. I’m thankful for my support system for taking my mind off of school, and I would like to make more time to do non-law school related activities. Though I don’t necessarily enjoy going to the gym, it’s an activity that has been a great outlet and I’m excited to incorporate it back into my routine.

Much love always.
